The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Kweku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has disclosed that the overwhelming support New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs have thrown behind the flagbearership bid of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is a reflection of the aspirations of delegates of their respective constituents.
Over 100 MPs of the Majority Caucus have reportedly declared support for Dr. Bawumia and after he met them in Parliament last week to formally inform them of his Presidential bid, many MPs have been speaking in his favour.
Mr Ampratwum-Sarpong, who described the overwhelming support offered Dr. Bawumia by the MPs during the meeting in Parliament, also said their action is because of the reality on the ground.
“When he met our Caucus, the support was massive and it was so obvious. I can say over 100 of us support him and we demonstrated that by giving him an overwhelming acclaim when he met us. It was tumultuous and the upcoming victory will be earth-shaking.
“As for the Ashanti Region, the support is so massive for Dr. Bawumia. I can surely tell you that out of the 43 MPs, 38 have openly declared their support for Bawumia as I speak to you, and I can tell you that even the rest, I know some two who will soon join the winning train.”
He assured that the overwhelming support of Dr. Bawumia by the MPs will reflect in the delegates votes, because the MPs are only taking directions from members of the party at the constituency levels .
“It is the grassroots that tell us what we should do. We are only following their direction.
“For example, delegates in my constituency came to me and said ‘Honourable, Bawumia is the one we want so if you don’t go in for Bawumia, we will remove you as a our MP.
“Yes that’s what my people told me. I don’t want trouble. If the people I lead say this is the direction they want, I have to meet their aspirations and lead them to where they want to be.
“As for Mampong Constituency, I can tell you it is 95% Bawumia at the polling stations. Other candidates come there to campaign, and when they come, the people call me. I tell them we are one people so just go and listen to their message and also take what they have for you. But they have firmly decided; their hearts are with Bawumia so when they meet others, they go in for the cash.”
