Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, has issued a stern warning regarding the potential consequences of delaying the passage of Ghana’s lithium agreement.
In a parliamentary session, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stressed the finite nature of lithium resources, urging lawmakers to act swiftly to prevent the country’s lithium assets from becoming stranded in the near future.
Speaking at a stakeholder forum in Parliament on Tuesday, September 3, he underscored the critical importance of the agreement, calling for its expedited passage through the legislative process.
His remarks come at a time when global demand for lithium—a crucial component in the production of batteries for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage—is rapidly increasing.
However, the MP cautioned that the window of opportunity to capitalize on this valuable resource may be narrower than anticipated.
“We must declare in our minds that if we don’t take action, we may experience stranded assets in the not-too-distant future. As far as lithium is concerned, we should not think that it is an eternal resource.
“What is happening now, pretty soon, if we are not careful, it may fall into the category of stranded assets. That is not to say that we should not approach it with some degree of caution.”
