Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has highlighted the party’s commitment to creating sustainable and well-paying jobs for the youth.
Speaking on the issue of youth employment in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, November 25, Mustapha emphasised the NPP’s historical and ongoing efforts to address this critical concern.
“If you look critically, the NPP has always tried to champion the youth agenda. If you go back to President Kufuor, when we noticed that youth unemployment was a threat to national security, we set up the National Youth Employment Programme, which today is the Youth Employment Agency (YEA),” Mustapha stated.
He acknowledged that despite the government’s efforts, unemployment remains high due to the increasing number of job seekers.
“Fast forward to today, unemployment is still high due to the large numbers we keep churning out. This government, so far in the history of our republic, has created the highest number of jobs, around 2 million, but it’s still not enough,” he noted.
Mustapha underscored the importance of job creation as a topical issue, referencing a recent programme he anchored for the presidential candidate at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
“Quite recently, about a month ago or so, I anchored a programme for the presidential candidate at the Borteyman Sports Complex where he extensively spoke about job creation under his presidency. By the grace of God, starting January 2025, we are saying so because we believe we have the potential to create more jobs,” he said.
Mustapha further explained that the NPP’s job creation strategy focuses on sustainable and decent employment opportunities.
“The areas that we are targeting to create the jobs are well within the framework that allows any avenues to create work, not some nebulous promise of one work divided by three people, a confused policy that is so difficult to explain by everyone, but sustainable, decent, well-paying jobs that Ghanaians can get to do,” he emphasized.
